What is a draft survey?

A draft survey studies and calculates the weight or vessel’s draft in various loading stages and conditions. Together, draft surveys and lightweight surveys form part of a so-called deadweight survey. For an adequate draught survey, you need hydrostatic data, the general arrangement plan, the tank arrangement plan as well as sounding tables and draft mark drawings.

When is a draft survey required?

During their operational life, ships may undergo minor or major refits or conversions. Refits and conversions are likely to affect the weight and draft of the ship as well as her behaviour during loading or unloading. Ship owners and operators must be sure of the behaviour of their ship during harbour operations.

Often, they are not aware of the fact that a draft survey is mandatory. IMO, classification and sometimes the flag state demand a draught survey every 3 to 5 years after a refit or adjustment. A draught survey is also required when the calculated weight of a ship is inconsistent with the measured draft. Obviously, complex situations may occur after major refits or when there are extremely tight deadlines. In some cases, a draught survey must be followed by a lightweight check.

With the assistance of Saltwater your draft surveys are accurate and complete.
